Vince & Bola

FEATURING THE VINCE GUARALDI & BOLA SETE COLLABORATIONS

Join the Bossa Nova Breakfast this week as we feature the creative, but all too brief, musical collaboration of pianist Vince Guaraldi and guitarist Bola Sete. Known to the jazz world for his 1962 recording Jazz Impressions of Black Orpheus, which included the hit song “Cast Your Fate to the Wind”, Guaraldi eventually gained fame with a larger audience through his original compositions and arrangements for the animated “Peanuts” television series. Rio de Janeiro born guitarist Bola Sete moved to the US in the late 1950s, and took part in the famous Carnegie Hall Bossa Nova Concert in 1962 before joining with Dizzy Gillespie’s band for a performance at the Monterey Jazz Festival and a subsequent tour. By 1963 Sete had become a regular member of Guaraldi’s trio in San Francisco, recording several albums and making numerous appearances with the pianist during the following three years.

The Bossa Nova Breakfast will be featuring some of the duo’s finest bossa-influenced music from their Fantasy Records releases Vince Guaraldi & Bola Sete and Friends, and Live at El Matador (Now part of the single CD reissue “Vince & Bola”) as well as From All Sides. Tune-in to hear their collaborations on “Mambossa”, “O Morro Nao Tem Vez”, “Star Song”, “The Girl from Ipanema”, “Little Fishes” and “More (Theme from Mondo Cane)”. Nilson Matta’s Black Orpheus

FEATURING NILSON MATTA’S BLACK ORPHEUS

Join the Bossa Nova Breakfast this week as we feature new music from Nilson Matta’s Black Orpheus. Considered among the finest bassists in jazz since moving to the US from his native Brazil, Matta has previously released several recordings under his own name including Copacabana, Walking My Bass, and Encontros: Meetings with Hendrik Meurkens. For many years he has also co-lead the groups Trio da Paz and Brazilian Trio. Throughout his career, the ability to move easily between the world of jazz and the traditions of Brazilian music has given him the opportunity to work with such artists as Joe Henderson, Don Pullen, Kenny Barron, Rosa Passos, Claudio Roditi and Eliane Elias.

Originally conceived as a stage play in 1956 by Vinicius de Moraes, “Orfeu da Conceição” was a modern take on the ancient Greek myth of Orpheus, set in the slums of Rio de Janeiro during Carnaval time. This contemporary re-telling the story would eventually receive international acclaim due to the success of the 1959 film adaptation titled “Black Orpheus”. Nilson Matta’s Black Orpheus draws inspiration from both of these sources, allowing the bassist to realize a dream many years in the making. His interpretation combines the music composed by Antonio Carlos Jobim for the play Orfeu da Conceição (Amzn), with the far more familiar soundtrack from the film Black Orpheus (Amzn), which added new music by Luiz Bonfa to Jobim’s already existing work. With the addition of two original compositions, and the gathering of a distinctive group of collaborators including Leny Andrade, Randy Brecker, Anat Cohen and Gretchen Parlato, Matta has succeeded in turning his vision of Black Orpheus into a truly unique listening experience.

Tune in to the Bossa Nova Breakfast this week for music from Nilson Matta’s Black Orpheus, plus all of your favorite Bossa Nova, Samba & Brazilian Jazz!

Getz/Gilberto at 50

CELEBRATING THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF GETZ/GILBERTO

This week the Bossa Nova Breakfast is celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the recording of Getz/Gilberto! Together at A&R Studios in New York on March 18th and 19th, 1963, Stan Getz, João Gilberto and Antonio Carlos Jobim created what was to become the seemingly effortless blend of American jazz and Brazilian samba that many consider to be the quintessential Bossa Nova recording. Released on Verve Records in 1964, Getz/Gilberto not only included definitive versions of “Só Danço Samba”, “O Grande Amor”, and “Desafinado”, it also featured what was then a recent composition by Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes; “The Girl from Ipanema.” With the last minute decision to record Gilberto’s wife Astrud singing the lyrics in English, “The Girl from Ipanema” turned into a surprise hit, and would eventually win a Grammy for Record of the Year.

Half a century later, Getz and Jobim are gone, João and Astrud Gilberto, divorced long ago, are each now living in retirement. And even though the worldwide fascination with Bossa Nova has long since faded, Getz/Gilberto has lost little of its original appeal.  Jobim’s incomparable music, combined with the lyrical tenor sax of Getz, and the intimate vocal style of Gilberto, continues to cast a spell on a new generation of listeners. To this day, the recording remains one of the best selling titles in the Verve Records catalog. Tune-in to the Bossa Nova Breakfast all week as we feature the timeless music of Getz/Gilberto, as well as other classic and contemporary Bossa nova recordings by Roberto Menescal, Marcos Valle, Sylvia Telles, Lisa Ono, Celso Fonseca and more.
