Music Producer, Getz/Gilberto Recording Engineer, Phil Ramone Has Died


LEGENDARY MUSIC PRODUCER PHIL RAMONE DIES AT 79

Phil Ramone, one of the most respected and sought after producers in the music industry passed away on March 30th, at the age of 79. His credits as a producer include recordings by such legendary artists as Frank Sinatra, Barbara Streisand, Bob Dylan and Ray Charles. As a young man, he was the recording engineer for one of the most popular jazz albums of all time, Getz/Gilberto, a collaboration between saxophonist Stan Getz and brazilian musician João Gilberto. The session featured many of composer Antonio Carlos Jobim’s most famous bossa nova melodies, including “The Girl from Ipanema” and “Corcovado.” Getz/Gilberto, recorded 50 years ago this month, won four Grammy Awards in 1965, including Ramone’s first ever win for “Best Engineed Album.” During his career he was nominated for a Grammy 33 times, and won a total 14, including a Technical Grammy Award in 2005 for a lifetime of innovative contributions to the recording industry.
