Statue Of Jobim Inaugurated At Ipanema Beach
Twenty years after famous Brazilian composer Antonio Carlos Jobim’s death, a statue in his honor was inaugurated in Ipanema. The statue of man who composed “The Girl From Ipamena” and many other classic songs from the Bossa Nova era stands on the shore at Arpoador beach, one of the master’s favorite spots.
The life-size sculpture was completed after six months of work by Christina Motta, the same artist who did the statue of Brigitte Bardot in Buzios, along with six others which stand in the same beach town. Motta told the media that she based Jobim’s look on a picture from the period of the composer’s greatest fame — the Bossa Nova period of the 1960s, during which he was working with co-composer and lyricist Vinicius de Moraes.
The inauguration took place in the presence of Jobim’s family, who approved of the statue, and the unveiling was accompanied by a performance of the Sexteto Terra Brasilis band. The statue shows the artist with his guitar over his right shoulder and looks as if he was casually walking along the beach. Jobim died on December 8, 1994 in New York when he was 67 years old.
